Dear March,

I have a proposition for you. Let's be gentle with each other. Let's sleep more, eat better, take our vitamins and exercise. Let's work on those to-do lists and make time for soul-satisfying creativity. What do you say?

Can't wait to see you!

Academy Awards

My apologies to all those who worked to make the Oscars memorable. My father was not impressed. In fact, he was rather bothered by the lack of class and number of costume changes.

Wine Tasting

Santa Cruz has some lovely wineries. But too much of a good thing can be pretty awful. Should you have the misfortune of drinking too much (which I really don't recommend), I hope for your own sake you have siblings as awesome as mine.

Thanks to Brene Brown for sharing this beautiful thought:

"Often people attempt to live their lives backwards, they try to have more things or more money in order to do more of what they want so that they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are then do what you need to do in order to have what you want. " ~ Margaret Young

There is not enough room in my life to have things how I want them and how they are. I must pick one.

Little Things

"Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. You don't fail overnight. Instead, failure is a few errors in judgment, repeated every day." ~Jim Rohn

I don't realize how attached I am to my habits until I read something like that, something that reminds me that the majority of my life will be made up of a few tiny decisions (good or bad) I repeat on a daily basis. Time to reexamine the little things.

A Devout Love

I don't think I've ever asked Saint Mary Magdalene for her intersession. But today John and I had the chance to venerate her relic (a piece of her tibia) at St. Joseph of Cupertino, the church where my grandma played bingo twice weekly.
As I waited in line to approach the glass tomb showcasing her bone, I thought about what favor I might request from this great saint called the Apostle to the Apostles.
A true love for God is what I decided. Moments later, John whispered in my ear, "Let's make sure to touch our wedding rings against the glass."

Sunday Matinee

Saw "The Rite," and then had a three-hour discussion regarding possession, oppression and the mercy of God.

Two Things

1. My sister has a new blog. She is Mama Lucaroberts, and she says when John and I have kids, they will be Stublerottis. Love it.
2. The talented Lexey Swall has a new website. Check out "Jesus Would Be, Like, Thrilled." I've shared it here before, but it's fun to watch again.

1. The product previously known as cellophane is now called "Lady Gaga's underwear" in my parents' home. This is key information in order to avoid confusion during casual conversation.
2. I've said the word vagina more times this week than all the times in my entire life combined. The Madwoman is responsible.
3. Today is National Drink Wine Day. Celebrate accordingly.

In a traditional Persian wedding, the married women closest to the bride hold a veil of silk above the wedding couple and shower them with sugar. This is what I think of when I think of blessings and friends.

Girl Talk

In 1964, struggling to define obscenity, Justice Potter Stewart said, "I know it when I see it." This is how I feel about the conversations between women in which intimate information is shared. Girl talk cannot really be defined, but I know it when I see it. It sometimes borders obscenity in the cleanest, purest way, of course.

Waiting Rooms

A tiny suggestion for hospital staff: Those calming drugs given to patients would be perfect for anxiously waiting family members.

PS: All is well. Praise to be to God!

Be a Valentine

“Love is the condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.” ~Robert Heinlein

Despite not knowing who most of the musicians are, my dad definitely appreciates their fashion choices.
During Lady Gaga's performance, he called my mom from the kitchen, "Carla, they're not wearing any underwear."
She studied the screen for a second. "Yes, they are. They're wearing cellophane."

All Smiles

I'm convinced that resembling my sister gets me extra smiles from Baby Dylan, which is pretty much the best thing ever.

A Question

My Darlings,

What motivates you, specifically regarding projects, work and goals? Just curious to know.

Thursday Love

The comedy lineup is a highlight of my week. That is all.

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

Maybe it's a dream or a topic of conversation or a seemingly random invitation, but some life experiences tend to repeat themselves. I used to take this as a sign that perhaps the particular thing that keeps showing up belongs in my life. Now, I just think it means I need to say 'no' louder.

I like the idea of transformation. I like the practice of it even better. Like leftover dinner rolls becoming a rich, creamy pudding.

Monday, February 7, 2011

I told John I could tell I didn't feel like myself today because I didn't call any of my friends. "Really," he said. "That is serious."

University Cafe

John was super impressed with the 70-something woman using an iPad, but I thought that was nothing compared to the 70-something man carrying his cup of coffee while balancing on roller blades.

Humble Pie

The cooking gods prefer modest servants. So, yes, the smoke alarm went off twice today and nearly a third of my Trader Joe's appetizers spilled across the floor of my car on the way to a dinner party.

Kitchen Miracle

I made an entire dinner (lemon pasta + a homemade lemon garlic cream sauce with peas + tilapia) and the smoke alarm didn't go off, not even once. I can't toast an English muffin without making that alarm blare. But John checked the batteries and they still work. So it really was a miracle.

Hidden Treasure

Hidden in a rose bush in my friend's backyard is a tiny hummingbird sitting on a tiny nest keeping two tiny eggs warm. I don't think many people have ever seen a sitting-still hummingbird and now I have. It was magic.

Crazy Train

Thinking can be dangerous. One unpleasant thought can lead to another can lead to another can lead to another. You need a cape and superpowers to put the breaks on that kind of runaway train. This thought was my cape today: Almost every worry on earth means nothing in heaven.

Dress Your Soul

She wasn't older than 4. She may have been 3. She was wearing a pink tutu over blue leggings and cowgirl boots decorated with a big heart on each one. This is how my soul would dress, if I allowed it to dress itself. Seeing her in all her fabulousness reminded me that we can't be everything, but we can be everything we're meant to be -- even if that's a ballerina and a cowgirl.
